Il Comitato Tecnico ISO/TC 69, Applicazioni dei Metodi Statistici, intende definire lo standard internazionale sulla metodologia del Six Sigma (approccio DFSS) basato sui risultati di un'indagine globale.

Introduction

In the 1980s, Motorola, Inc., in the USA, developed Six Sigma, based on Total Quality Management (TQM), which Japanese organizations widely practiced. Six Sigma is a continuous, company-wide initiative designed to improve quality and reduce waste. Its full-scale introduction began in the late 1980s. Following Motorola's success and that of General Electric (GE), other companies introduced Six Sigma, building upon it.

On the other hand, in classic Six Sigma DMAIC projects, customer satisfaction was not always the focus of the improvement activities. The focus was often on the organization's internal benefits and cost reduction. In such cases, the Six Sigma activities did not directly meet the customers' needs.

GE developed "Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)" in the mid-1990s as a new methodology to ensure Six Sigma quality in the development and design of new products and services. Six Sigma's DMAIC methodology, an existing process improvement method for enhancing current products, processes, and services, cannot encompass all aspects of new development. Since then, "Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)" has spread throughout the U.S. and the world. Many organizations and companies adopted DFSS. The DFSS approach helps meet or exceed customer expectations. It has a much greater impact on failure rates and cost reduction than any problem-solving technique that focuses solely on existing process improvement, such as DMAIC.

Numerous versions of DFSS have been developed and adapted to date. The lack of standardization of DFSS over the past 20 years has led to multiple acronyms for the DFSS project implementation, including DMADV, IDDOV, DMEDI, DCDOV, DICOV, and IDOV (see Clause 4, Table 1). These variations of the DFSS phase models differ in emphasis and focus, which can lead to confusion.

Many organizations have already implemented a DFSS approach, which in many cases is an extension of Six Sigma efforts. And as it is, it isn't easy to reach a common understanding of the basic concepts and communicate about them. To overcome this obstacle, it was decided to create an international standard on DFSS based on the results of a global survey.

The Technical Committee ISO/TC 69, Applications of Statistical Methods, Subcommittee TC 69/SC 7, Application of Statistical and Related Techniques for Implementing Six Sigma, has developed several international standards related to Six Sigma under the common title "Statistical methods - Six Sigma - ." TC69/SC7, Application of Statistical and Related Techniques for Implementing Six Sigma: We have already published "ISO 13053-1~": Quantitative Methods in Process Improvement - Six Sigma - Part 1: DMAIC Methodology, which deals with improving existing products, processes, and services.

This international standard, "DFSS," can encompass not only new product development - such as design and development work - but also new business development, service development, and process development. This international standard is a guideline for countries, organizations, and companies planning to introduce "DFSS" in the future, providing an understanding of "DFSS."

As mentioned above, many phase models already exist in DFSS. A general 5-phase model is used in this document to explain DFSS. The purpose of this document is not to unify the diverse current-phase models of DFSS, but to clarify the common "objectives and principles of DFSS" they share.

1 Scope

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a methodology used to innovate, develop, or redesign processes, products, or services. This international standard provides a common understanding of the principles, terminology, and guidelines for applying various methods and tools within DFSS. Furthermore, it outlines how multidisciplinary teams can effectively implement DFSS. It is essential to note that DFSS is not intended to replace an organization's existing development processes; instead, it aims to enhance them significantly.
