The European Commission has prioritised the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scientific research, including life sciences and biotechnology, through various initiatives such as the AI in Science Strategy and the Apply AI Strategy.

As AI-enabled life-science solutions in Research and Development (R&D) become a strategic priority for the European Union, it is essential to understand the current landscape of AI in life sciences, which can bring significant benefits but also raises important questions and challenges.

This report provides an overview of the capabilities and trends of certain AI models with applications in molecular and cellular biology. Based on a comprehensive dataset of biology AI systems and other literature, the report aims to set realistic expectations, inform research trends, and support informed policy and governance decisions.

Additionally, these findings highlight the need for transparent reporting standards and validation frameworks that enable reproducible, relevant and comparable assessment of AI-designed biomolecules, as well as emerging molecular-cellular and bio(techno)logical innovations.
